About Us.

Our Purpose.

HerSpace is the first not-for-profit organisation specialising in providing trauma-informed wellbeing and mental health recovery services to women survivors (aged 16 and over) of exploitation in Australia. There is an urgent need for women survivors in Australia to receive specialised therapeutic support. These women are currently at risk of falling through the cracks of available wellbeing and mental health recovery supports.

Exploitation includes all forms of sexual exploitation, human trafficking, slavery and slavery-like practices such as servitude, forced labour, debt bondage, deceptive practices to obtain labour or services and forced marriage.

We believe that every woman has the right to the opportunity to recover from adverse experiences to go on to live a life of purpose and hope. The recovery journey for women who have experienced exploitation can be long, painful and difficult. Our programs are designed from the lived experience of women survivors who have healed from trauma and gone on to live happier and safer lives.

We take a holistic approach to supporting survivors of exploitation in Australia to recover their wellbeing and purpose. Our services are trauma-informed, client-led and individually tailored to the unique needs of each woman.  Our team of specialist therapeutic staff utilise a diverse range of evidence-informed therapeutic modalities, including conventional talk therapy, cognitive behavioural therapy, art therapy, dance/movement therapy, body-based approaches, mindfulness approaches, systemic approaches and interventions for working with dissociative systems.

Our History.

In 2009 Emily Hanscamp visited Mumbai, India, and was deeply impacted by the exploitation and trauma faced by the women there. It was clear to her that psychological and emotional barriers were some of the most significant challenges women faced when trying to leave situations of exploitation. With a new awareness after returning to Australia, Emily founded Asha Global to support these women. From this work, HerSpace was later established and began to provide services in the Australian context as it became apparent that these practices were also occurring in Australia.
